Learning for Life

PSHE

PSHE & Wellbeing at Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School

Intent

At Fawbert & Barnard’s, PSHE and RSE sit under our wider Wellbeing curriculum, which supports pupils to become healthy, safe, independent and responsible citizens. Our intent is to equip children with the emotional, social and moral skills they need to thrive—now and in later life.

Through high-quality teaching, children learn:

  • how to keep themselves physically and emotionally healthy
  • how to build and maintain positive, respectful relationships
  • how to recognise risks, keep safe and seek help appropriately
  • the correct vocabulary for private body parts and the understanding that their body belongs to them
  • how to understand and regulate their emotions
  • how to respect difference and value diversity
  • how to take responsibility for themselves, their choices and the wider community

Our Wellbeing curriculum fosters confidence, emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience and self-worth, fully aligned with our school values of Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Trustworthiness.

We want every child to leave Fawbert & Barnard’s with the skills to navigate an ever-changing world safely and confidently—truly Learning for Life.

Implementation

Curriculum Structure

PSHE, RSE and Wellbeing are taught weekly through:

  • My Happy Mind, which develops emotional wellbeing, resilience and positive mental health
  • Explicit teaching of the three statutory strands:
    • Health and Wellbeing
    • Relationships
    • Living in the Wider World

Topics are revisited in an age-appropriate, spiral curriculum so children deepen understanding as they move through the school.

Safe, Supportive Learning Environment

Teachers create a safe space for sensitive discussions by:

  • establishing clear ground rules
  • modelling respectful language
  • using question boxes for anonymous worries
  • ensuring children know who to talk to if they need help

Role play, circle time, discussions and scenario-based tasks help pupils apply knowledge in meaningful, real-life contexts.

Responsive to Pupils’ Needs

Lessons adapt to:

  • the needs of individuals
  • class dynamics
  • local safeguarding issues
  • ongoing wellbeing monitoring

Additional content is taught when needed—for example, online safety reminders, friendship support or emotional regulation strategies.

Whole-School Links

Wellbeing is embedded across the school through:

  • celebration assemblies
  • British Values
  • social, moral, spiritual and cultural learning (SMSC)
  • safeguarding curriculum
  • leadership opportunities (School Council, Prefects, House Captains, Play Leaders)
  • themed weeks such as Snacktember, Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Week and Healthy Living Week
