Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Rooted in our values: Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Trustworthiness • Responsibility

CURRICULUM INTENT

At Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School, our curriculum embodies our motto: Learning for Life. The curriculum is designed to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious education that equips every child with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes they need not only for school, but for life. Guided by our school values—Kindness, Respect, Resilience, Trustworthiness and Responsibility—we aim to develop pupils who are:

  • Literate, numerate and digitally confident
  • Independent, critical thinkers who can question, reason and articulate ideas
  • Creative, imaginative and resilient learners who persevere through challenge
  • Confident, aspirational individuals ready for secondary school and life beyond
  • Respectful citizens who value diversity and contribute positively to their community

Our curriculum celebrates the cultural wealth of our community and provides opportunities for pupils to understand and appreciate the diverse society they live in. We promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, ensuring they are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Our curriculum meets the expectations of the National Curriculum 2014 and is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring progression and coherence across all subjects.

CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION

We deliver our curriculum through a themed, knowledge-rich and project-based approach that ensures:

  • Clear sequencing and progression in skills and knowledge
  • High engagement and curiosity through purposeful, well-planned topics
  • Opportunities for children's voice, ensuring learning is relevant and meaningful
  • Frequent memorable experiences, including trips, visitors, workshops, exhibitions and “fabulous finish” days
  • A strong focus on the arts and music, supported by specialist teaching and rich performance opportunities
  • A wide and inclusive offer of extracurricular clubs

High-Quality Teaching

High-quality first teaching is at the heart of implementation. Teachers use:

  • Explicit modelling and shared writing
  • Robust vocabulary instruction
  • Daily retrieval practice
  • Skilled questioning and assessment for learning
  • Carefully planned scaffolding for SEND and disadvantaged pupils
  • Challenge and greater depth tasks for the most able

Our curriculum is inclusive. Pupils who need additional support receive targeted interventions, while those who are ready for more depth are challenged through open-ended tasks, reasoning and problem-solving.

Subject Leadership

Subject leaders play a vital role in ensuring curriculum quality. They:

  • Monitor teaching, learning and books
  • Review planning and progression
  • Lead CPD and coach colleagues
  • Analyse data and identify strengths and next steps
  • Celebrate effective practice across the school

All subject leaders receive ongoing training to deepen their expertise and strengthen the curriculum as a whole.

CURRICULUM IMPACT

The impact of our curriculum is seen in pupils who:

  • Demonstrate confidence, independence and resilience
  • Show our values—Kindness, Respect, Responsibility and Trustworthiness—in daily learning
  • Achieve strong outcomes across subjects
  • Produce books that show progression, pride and high-quality work
  • Talk confidently about what they have learnt and how it connects over time
  • Develop secure knowledge they can apply in new contexts
  • Experience high levels of enjoyment, engagement and curiosity

SEND and disadvantaged pupils make good progress because teaching is adaptive, targeted and ambitious.

High-quality experiences—such as trips, visitors, performances and competitions—enhance cultural capital and give pupils meaningful opportunities to write, perform, design, create and collaborate.

Our pupils regularly share their learning with families, peers and the wider community through:

  • Learning showcases
  • Assemblies and performances
  • Sporting events
  • Cross-school collaborations
  • Competitions and celebrations

Ultimately, our curriculum nurtures well-rounded, responsible citizens who are ready to succeed in the next stage of their education and in the wider world.
