The Fawbert & Barnard’s Way
Learning for Life • Values for Life • Community for Life
Our School Community
Fawbert & Barnard’s Primary School is a warm, thriving community built on strong relationships between pupils, staff, families and governors. Over recent years, we have transformed our curriculum, culture and environment to ensure every child receives the highest-quality education, develops essential life skills, and grows into a resilient, independent learner.
We are proud of our family atmosphere and our commitment to nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally and morally.
Our School Values
At the heart of our vision Learning for Life are our five core values, created collaboratively with governors, staff and pupils:
Kindness | Responsibility | Resilience | Respect | Trustworthiness
These values shape everything we do and help children thrive in school and beyond. They guide behaviour, relationships, assemblies, celebrations, trips, leadership opportunities and daily interactions. Through these values, pupils grow emotionally, socially, spiritually and culturally.
Our values are lived in ourselves, in our school community, and in the wider world.
Behaviour at Fawbert & Barnard’s
We have high expectations of behaviour because we know it is central to learning, progress and pupil wellbeing. We aim to create a safe, calm and respectful environment where children feel secure and ready to learn.
We promote positive behaviour through:
- clear routines and expectations
- consistent behaviour systems
- praise and rewards
- strong relationships
- restorative approaches where needed
Pupils are expected to show self-control, respect for others, pride in their school and responsibility for their actions. Where behaviour does not meet expectations, we work closely with families to support improvement and ensure pupils are well cared for.
(See our Behaviour Policy for full details.)
Collective Worship & Assemblies
Assemblies are a valued part of school life. They bring us together as a community to reflect, celebrate achievements, learn about our values and think deeply about the world.
We enjoy a wide range of assemblies including:
- values-based assemblies
- singing assemblies
- festival celebrations across major world religions
- awareness days and themed weeks (e.g., Anti-Bullying, Black History Month)
- visitor-led assemblies
We welcome regular visitors from Harlow Baptist Church and members of Great Open Door, alongside other faith and community leaders.
Leadership, Pupil Voice & Responsibility
Leadership opportunities are a key part of The F&B Way. Every child is encouraged to take responsibility and contribute to school life.
Leadership roles include:
- School Council
- Prefects
- Play Leaders (Year 5)
- Librarians
- House Captains
- Eco-leaders
- Digital Leaders
- Head Boy & Head Girl
Our leadership programmes are meaningful, professional and exciting.
Democratic Elections – Just Like the Real Thing
Our School Council elections now closely mirror national elections:
- pupils prepare manifestos
- candidates deliver speeches
- the local MP has trained pupils on campaigning
- we run elections on a Thursday, using
• real ballot boxes
• real ballot papers
• a staffed polling station
This gives children authentic experience of democracy in action.

We offer a rich range of extra-curricular clubs that reflect our commitment to developing confident, well-rounded young people:

- Livewire – high-impact workshops on confidence, behaviour, teamwork and aspiration
- Local sports organisations
- Local churches and community groups
These partnerships help pupils develop respect, communication skills, teamwork and resilience.
British Values at Fawbert & Barnard’s
We actively promote British Values as part of our curriculum and school culture. Pupils learn to:
- understand democracy and participate in decision-making
- respect different beliefs and viewpoints
- understand the rule of law and why rules matter
- recognise individual liberty and personal choice
- value diversity and challenge discrimination
These values prepare pupils to be thoughtful, responsible citizens in modern Britain.
